Why death penalties are necessary for PvP.

Death penalties should be seen as a necessary part to both PvE and PvP, providing a sense of consequence to ingame actions. Granted, dying is not always the result of bad player decisions; mob respawn, runners bringing adds, overpulling, etc. can all lead to player deaths. Without any penalty, players would simply be able to suicide run their way through content. Having at least a minimal penalty helps teach the player to be a bit more careful in the future. Yet, games that have little or no penalty for dying are generally seen by a majority of players as more “fun” or “better” to play. Why is this?

My mom called me on Thursday 5/3 to say that my dad’s surgeries had gone fine that morning, but his blood pressure had crashed twice already - once during the night before and once as they were getting ready to take him out of the OR. Then he apparently crashed again as they got him back to his room in the ICU Burn ward. Back in the room they called a code 99 on him, which means any available personnel in the whole hospital respond. My mom worked in a hospital for over 30 years, she knows what the codes mean. And the doctor told her that she needed to make some decisions for going forward.

So an update:My dad’s doing basically the same with slight improvements. The heart stress tests they did this morning and yesterday were better then the doctors expected, so unless the cardiologist says differently for reason, they are planning on starting skin grafts tomorrow (surgery is only done on Mondays and Thursdays). We’ll be allowed to see him before he goes to surgery, so I’ll be bringing my mom over early and then the free wifi abuse begins in earnest.

He was a bit more responsive/awake yesterday. He opened his eyes and turned his head towards me when I came in and talked to him and when my mom said she wished she could give him a hug, he tried to lift his arms to her. That’s good news all around. He’s been pretty zonked out today, but that’s not necessarily bad.

Well, for the second time this month, I’m back home at my family’s house, staying with my parents. This time, it’s for my dad.

Saturday morning, my dad was burning brush in the backyard (hometown allows burning). He stepped in a hole and fell face forward into the fire. Right now, he’s in the burn unit ICU at St. John’s Mercy hospital in St. Louis with second and third degree burns on the upper half of his body. Basically from his navel up, both arms (one arm has a huge gash along it as well) and hands, shoulders and upper back and his face is burned. It’s mostly second degree burns on his face, luckily.

So today is April 1st aka April Fools Day. I used to think this was such a cool holiday as a kid, and then I grew up. What is it about this day that makes adults think they can do the most retarded and absurd things and have it be funny? Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoy humor and jokes, but some of the stuff done in the name of April Fools Day just boggles my mind.

Title: Conversations in Winter
Author:
Rhyssa Fireheart
Pairing:
Zolf J. Kimbley/Ellorie Sandersen (OC)
Fandom:
Fullmetal Alchemist
Rating: T
Disclaimer:
I still don’t own FMA or anything but the plot and my OC.
Notes: I’m sure there is rampant OOC-ness in most of this, but since there isn’t a huge amount of “official” canon to go by, I’m making it up as I go. A continuation of sorts of my story “Conversations by Starlight.” This one is also manga-verse, after chapter 67.

Yet another fanfiction story I wrote for Fullmetal Alchemist (FMA). This one got in my head after reading the latest scanlations online at ZOMGFTA. They are marvelous and I rather like seeing the differences in translation between what they did and what the actual manga says when it’s released.
Anyways, I’m rather enjoying the manga version of Kimbley because he’s so much more different than the anime version. Such a sharp dressed man. Writing this story completely changes some of the backstory events on another one I’m working on using the same original character (OC) Ellorie, but that story is in the infant stages and I can adapt it easily.
I wrote this as the orgin story for my character in a D&D 3.5 campaign a friend was running.  The group I game with on Friday nights is huge - 8 players + the DM - and on our first night, the DM just tossed us into the middle of the action without figuring out how we’ve all come together.  At the end of the campaign, instead of just handing over the item we were hired to get (which I was holding), I demanded that we be paid first.  I know, extremely rude of me, and it ended up almost getting us blacklisted by our patron.  Luckily, a few of the others characters (including one lawyerly-type) managed to suck up to her enough to get another hire, and aided by the fact that I had to miss a few evenings, everything has been semi-smoothed over now. We’re playing another game currently, but I really wish we could go back to this one some day.
I’m not sure how I skipped posting this before, so I’ll just mark it as of today’s date and leave it at that. This was originally written back in October, 2005.
